Abstract

Program Studi : S1 Sastra Inggris Judul : Translation Techniques of Figurative Language Used in Edgar Allan Poe‟s Short Stories Pembimbing : Gunawan Tambunsaribu, S.S.,M.Sas Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisa jenis-jenis bahasa kiasan dan teknik yang diterapkan dalam terjemahan cerita pendek. Metode yang digunakan penulis adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Penulis mengambil data dari empat cerita pendek yang ditulis oleh Edgar Allan Poe dengan judul, The Fall of the House of Usher, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Tell-Tale Heart and The Black Cat yang kemudian diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa Indonesia oleh Maggie Tiojakin menjadi Misteri Rumah Keluarga Usher, Jurang dan Pendulum, Gema Jantung yang Tersiksa and Kucing Hitam. Kata kunci: penerjemahan, bahasa kiasan, teknik penerjemahan./ Name : Sarah Sonia Angelika Study Program : English Literature (S1) Title : Translation Techniques of Figurative Language Used in Edgar Allan Poe‟s Short Stories Advisor : Gunawan Tambunsaribu, S.S.,M.Sas This study aims to analyze the types of figurative language and techniques applied in the short stories translation. The methodology used for this research is descriptive qualitative. The data analyzed in this study were taken from four short stories written by Edgar Allan Poe with the title, The Fall of the House of Usher, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Tell-Tale Heart and The Black Cat which were then translated into Indonesian by Maggie Tiojakin Misteri Rumah Keluarga Usher, Jurang dan Pendulum, Gema Jantung yang Tersiksa and Kucing Hitam. The writer found 6, out of 8 kinds of figurative language, based on the 51 figurative languages used in the four short stories. The kinds of figurative language used in the four short stories are simile, metaphor, synecdoche, allusion, personification and hyperbole. The translation technique dominantly used by translator is established equivalent. Established equivalent is translation techniques that emphasize the commonness of terms or expressions in the target language. Established equivalent is applied to the translation of 4 figurative languages which are, one personification, 2 metaphors and 1 simile. This study concludes that figurative language can not only be translated literally into the source language, but can also follow the prevalence of the target language which can also help the target language reader in understanding the meaning of the figurative language. Keywords: translation, figurative language, translation techniques
