Abstract

Tahongai (Kleinhovia hospita L.) is known as one of herbal medicine in Indonesia. Tahongai belongs to Malvaceae. In other region of Indonesia, Tahongai is known as timoho (Javanese) and paliasa (Bugis language). Several compounds, such as scopoletin, quarcetin, rutin and kaempferol have been isolated from tahongai have a great pharmacological potential, but until now there is not many scientific information about the effects of toxicity from Tahongai’s leaves and stem barks extract. The aims of this research were determine the toxicity from the extracts using Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) and the content of its compounds using phytochemical screening. The results showed both extract have toxicity effect against Artemia salina larvae. The effects of toxixity are increasingly accorded by increased concentration of the extracts. Tahongai’s leaves extract exhibited the presence of alkaloids, tannins, and saponins, at the same time Tahongai’s stem bark extract contains alkaloids and tannins.
