Abstract

This article will examine French military intervention in internal conflict in Mali in 2013. The intervention surprised the international community because it came earlier than the time set by UN Security Council that is September 2013. This article argues there are at least four reasons that motivate France to be involved in internal conflict in Mali. First, France would like to protect her workers in Mali. Second, France would like to protect Mali’s mineral resources. It has been known that Mali is rich of gold, diamond, uranium and others. French would like to explore those resources. Third, France would like to protect Mali’s people from the threat of Islamic radical movements. Since the coup d’etat period, there are serious human rights violation in Mali, especially to children and women. Fourth, France tries to combat the expansion of the movements to other countries. The expansion of the movements could danger the stability of the region.
