Abstract

Di masa globalisasi sekarang ini, salah satu isu yang paling disorot dalam hubungan internasional (HI) adalah lingkungan. Lingkungan merupakan aspek penting yang kini menjadi perhatikan aktor internasional seperti, negara. Pengaruh membentuk peta politik dunia baru yang lebih dinamis, fleksibel dan saling berhubungan. Pihak yang berperan dalam peta politik yang baru ini tidak hanya berpusat pada aktor-aktor internasional yang konvensional seperti negara tetapi juga media yang dapat muncul sebagai salah satu aktor sentral yang berpengaruh dalam perputaran alur politik dunia. Salah satu bukti konkrit peran media dalam politik lingkungan internasional adalah film Deepwater Horizon mengenai kasus pencemaran lingkungan di wilayah perairan AS. Peristiwa Deepwater Horizon merupakan pencemaran lingkungan terbesar dalam sejarah Amerika yang menarik perhatian publik internasional sehubungan dengan ekspose media. Ekspose tersebut dilakukan dengan menggunakan berbagai macam bentuk media seperti surat kabar, radio, internet, dan film. Untuk menunjukkan peran media dalam diplomasi lingkungan AS, peneliti mengangkat studi kasus film Deepwater Horizon dan konsep diplomasi lingkungan sebagai unit dan alat analisa penelitian. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian kualitatif dengan teknik pengumpulan data seperti survei literatur dan observasi. Penelitian ini berargumen bahwa media merupakan komponen penting yang berperan dalam politik lingkungan internasional, khususnya diplomasi lingkungan / In the current era of globalization, one of the most highlighted issues in international relations (IR) is the environment. The environment is an important aspect being considered by various international actors such as the state as a crucial sector and also a shared responsibility. The influence of the environment issues is shaping the new world political map to be dynamic, flexible, and interconnected. The parties involved in the new political map are not only centered on conventional international actors such as the state but also the media, which is emerging as one of the central actors influencing world political flows. A concrete evidence of the media’s role in the international environmental politics is the case of environmental pollution that occurred in the waters of the United States, Deepwater Horizon. It is the most significant environmental pollution event in America’s history attracting world public attention due to the media exposure. The exposure had been carried out in various forms of media, such as newspapers, radio, internet, or film. To reveal the media’s role in the United States environmental diplomacy, the researcher will raise the Deepwater Horizon movie as a case study and the concept of environmental diplomacy as a unit and research analysis tool. This study uses qualitative research methods with data collection techniques, such as literature surveys and observations. This study argues that media is an essential component that plays a role in the international environmental politics, specifically related to the environmental diplomacy
