Abstract

One of the oldest monarchies that still manages to maintain its existence and legitimacy to this day is the British monarchy. As the most popular and most powerful monarchy in today's modern world, the British monarch still continue to maintain their hereditary rights as legitimate rulers over the people of England, United Kingdom and the Commonwealth realm. This study explores the strategy of the British monarchy and the power that operates on Queen Elizabeth II, the Royal Family, the British people, and the people of the Commonwealth realm through Postmodernism's perspective, namely Michel Foucault's theory of the power–knowledge relations. Like typical glasses that can have 2 different lenses between the left and right eyes, the author will also use 2 different lenses, namely disciplinary power and governmentality in the same frame, namely the panopticon sensor. This qualitative research uses the genealogical method of Jacques Derrida. It is alleged that there was continuous individual and massive disciplinary to control both individuals and populations to receive and reproduce knowledge and/or power of the British monarchy.
