Abstract

Indonesian people still confess and use traditional remedy up to now. One of the traditional remedies that empirically used as hipnotic sedative is Coriandri fructus. The goal of this experiment is to find out whether Coriandri fructus can be used as sleep medicine by measuring sleep quality that is induced by Coriandri fructus. This experiment is a true experiment with single subject research, which has been done to 11 men that fulfill inclusion criteria, who are chosen using purposive sampling. Each sample sleeps three times, 7.5 hours in each sleep that observed through overnight polysomnography. Lorazepam induces the first sleep, the second sleep is control (placebo), and Coriandri fructus induces the third sleep. Parameters used in this exsperiments are Sleep Onset Latency, Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Onset Latency, and Total Time in REM. This study shows that the effect of lorazepam and Coriandri fructus on sleep parameter is various. Coriandri fructus doesn’t tend to have inconvenient effects on sleep. Lorazepam has adverse effect on REMS parameters. Sleep induced by Coriandri fructus tends not to be different compared to the one induced by placebo, meanwhile sleep induced by lorazepam has lower quality compared to the one induced by placebo
