Abstract

The doctrine of predestination is the doctrine of the church which states everything that happens in the world has been determined by God, including those who will be saved, have been by God since the beginning through His election. The doctrine of predestination has a long history. The study begins in the early church, the Middle Ages, the Reformation, and the modern century. The persistent theologian discussing about predestination in the Early Century is Aurelius Augustine conflicted by Pelagius. In the Middle Ages theologians on average spoke of it as a response to William Ockham's understanding about divine will and human freedom were following Pelagius's teachings. One of the characters who discuss about it was Thomas Aquinas. In reformatison of character who discus about it include: Martin Luther, Philips Melanchthon and John Calvin. In modern times, one of the characters who talked about it was Karl Barth. It can not be denied that the Predestination doctrine of talks is inseparable from controversy, so it causes pros and cons in its history until the present day. Despite of the pros and cons the Predestination doctrine remains relevant taught to the congregation because it has the advantage both in the ream of history and the , theologi to give the believers the strengthening of faith in dealing with the problem of live that God has chosen and determined to be His member, therefore God will not leave it. The advantage of the doctrine of Predestination causes the doctrine is still to relevant to be taught to the congregation, particulary the Protestant Church congregation in Western Indonesia (GPIB). The result of authors research through interviews to the GPIB Synod Assembly, although the historical predestination understanding almost in uninteiligible. The result of research show the doctrine is still so relevant to be taught to the congregation, besides GPIB as a Calvinis Church. The authors suggest the steps that must be taken by the GPIB Synodal Assembly through the Department of Theology so that the doctrine of Predestination to be taught ini Christian Religious Education at GPIB.
