Abstract

In this project paper, the writer discusses “An Analysis of Implicature on Maxim Conversation in the Screenplay Twilight by Melissa Rosenberg”. The data are gotten from the characters utterances that have been transformed in the form of script. The theory which is used in this project paper is cooperative principle that is elaborated in four sub-principles called maxims. The four maxims are maxim of Quantity, maxim of Quality, maxim of Relevance, and maxim of Manner. The context is also used as a supporting theory of the analysis. Firstly, the writer finds the utterances that violate the maxims as the data. Secondly, the data are classified based on the types of maxims. Finally, the writer finds the implicature of the utterances in the screenplay Twilight. In the dialogues of the characters taken from the screenplay Twilight, the four maxims are violated. There are four utterances that violate maxim of Quantity; those can be found in pages 4, 29, 40, and 44. Six utterances violate maxim of Quality; they can be seen in pages 15, 23, 27, 34, 40, and 43. While the utterances that violate maxim of Relevance can be found in pages 7, 15, 36, 42, and two utterances in page 9. The last is one utterance in page 7 that violate maxim of Manner. From the analysis, it can be seen that maxim of Quality and maxim of Relevance are the most violated. Key word: Implicature, Cooperative principle, Maxims, Twilight.
