Abstract
The globalization of popular culture enables cultural symbols to transcend national boundaries and undergo shifts in meaning across various social and political contexts, including practices of social activism. The Jolly Roger flag of the Straw Hat Pirates from the anime One Piece, which has appeared in several protest movements in democratic countries such as Indonesia and Nepal, has been utilized as a symbol of resistance against political power perceived as repressive and unjust. This study aims to examine the process of transnationalization of this popular culture symbol and its role in shaping transnational social activism. This research employs Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory to analyze symbolic meaning through three levels of signification: denotation, connotation, and myth. In addition, the concept of cultural transnationalization and a social activism framework are used to explain the cross-border circulation of symbols through digital media, fandom networks, and global public spaces. Adopting a qualitative descriptive approach, this study utilizes visual documentation and observation of the Jolly Roger flag in demonstrations at the Indonesian DPR/MPR building and the Nepalese Parliament. This study is expected to demonstrate that popular culture symbols can operate as transnational political media that facilitate social activism with differing roles across national political contexts.
