Abstract

The rise of social media has transformed marketing communication strategies from a company-centred approach to one that involves active user participation through User-Generated Content (UGC). TikTok, as a short-form video platform, offers brands the opportunity to build brand awareness more organically through user-generated content. One phenomenon that has attracted attention is the viral ‘under the tree’ content by a Make-up Artist (MUA) client using Emina products, which garnered high engagement from TikTok users. This study aims to analyse how Emina utilises User-Generated Content (UGC) from such customer-generated content as a digital marketing communication strategy to enhance brand awareness on TikTok. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach using the netnography method. Data were collected through observation of nine TikTok videos selected purposively during January 2025, digital documentation, and analysis of visual elements, narratives, hashtags, interaction patterns, user comments, and the community’s digital footprint. Data analysis was carried out through the stages of identification, open coding, axial coding, selective coding, data interpretation, and drawing conclusions. This study refers to Aaker’s concept of brand awareness, which encompasses brand recognition, brand recall, and top-of-mind awareness. The research findings show that content authenticity, the use of simple and natural storytelling, direct demonstrations of product use, active interaction between creators and the audience in the comments section, and consistent use of hashtags are capable of building brand awareness, strengthening brand recall, and even resulting in Emina being the top-of-mind brand for a portion of the audience. Reposting of content by Emina’s official account also reinforces social validation, broadens the reach of the message, and enhances the credibility of the content. Consequently, UGC has proven to be an effective digital marketing communication strategy for building brand awareness in an organic, collaborative and community-based manner within the TikTok ecosystem. Keywords: Brand Awareness, User Generated Content, TikTok, Netnography, Emina.
