Abstract
/The advancement of esports in the era of digital globalization has transformed online gaming from mere entertainment into a strategic instrument within International Relations studies. Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) has rapidly grown into a transnational phenomenon in Southeast Asia, producing cultural symbols, identities, and representations. This study aims to analyze how MLBB esports serves as a soft power instrument and impacts Indonesia's nation branding and creative economy during the 2018–2026 period. This research employs a qualitative-descriptive approach, with data gathered through literature reviews, secondary document analysis, and data triangulation techniques. The conceptual framework is built upon Joseph S. Nye’s soft power theory, John Howkins’ creative economy theory, and Anthony Giddens’ concept of globalization. The findings indicate that MLBB effectively operates as a soft power mechanism through cultural attraction, as evidenced by the integration of Indonesian mythological characters like Gatotkaca and Kadita, which are actively consumed by the regional community. In terms of public diplomacy, the achievements of professional teams in international tournaments are strategically managed through state actor policies—including PBESI, IESPA, and Kemenparekraf to foster a digitally advanced image of Indonesia. Economically, the MLBB ecosystem acts as a catalyst for the national creative economy by generating new employment opportunities (professional athletes, casters, content creators, and event organizers) and driving supporting digital industries. This study concludes that esports has transformed into a proactive digital cultural diplomacy instrument that expands regional influence while strengthening the national economy in the contemporary era. Keywords: esports, Mobile Legends, soft power, public diplomacy, creative economy, Indonesia, Southeast Asia.
