Abstract

Abstract : The Sangatta Multipurpose Building (GSG) is a public building in East Kutai Regency that applies Dayak Kenyah-motif roof ornaments as an effort to represent local identity in modern architecture. This study aims to evaluate the extent to which the roof ornaments of GSG Sangatta function as markers of Dayak Kenyah local identity through Kenneth Frampton’s Critical Regionalism approach. The method used is qualitative evaluative with data triangulation from field observations, visual documentation, questionnaires administered to 15 respondents (customary leaders, architectural practitioners, and building users), and in-depth interviews with Dayak Kenyah customary leaders regarding the cultural meaning of the ornaments. The results show that the human figure, pucuk paku, and hornbill motifs placed at the apex and edges of the roof were successfully recognized as markers of Dayak Kenyah identity by all respondents. Evaluation of the six principles of Critical Regionalism shows a conformity rate of 85.2%, with the highest achievement in sense of place (97.2%) and critique of civilization (96.3%). However, the use of iron plate material as a substitute for ulin wood creates a critical weakness in the tactility aspect (38.7%), so that the roof ornaments have not fully strengthened local identity in an authentic manner as required by Frampton’s Critical Regionalism principles.
