Abstract

This research was conducted to see whether Short Story Analysis can improve the tenth graders’ mastery of the Simple Past Tense and to investigate whether the students are interested in the used of Short Story Analysis to improve tenth graders’ Simple Past Tense mastery. The participants of this classroom action research were the 33 students at the class X Accountancy 2 at SMK Muara Indonesia, Jakarta Timur. This research is a Classroom Action Research that was done in two cycles. The researcher used tests and observation to collect the data. To analyze the data the descriptive of the quantitative and qualitative data is used to present the improvement of the tenth graders’ mastery of the Simple Past Tense and to present the result of the research in the form of descriptive explanation. The students’ scores of pre-test for the higher category “excellent” was 0%, and the lower category “having difficulty” was 20,75%. The mean score of the pretest was 48,48. In the next meeting in progressing test, the students’ mean score was 57,2. In the post-test I the students’ scores for category “excellent” was 7,65%, and category “having difficulty” was 3,47%. The mean score of the post-test I was 69,69. In the post-test II the students’ score for category “excellent” was 36,88% and category “having difficulty” was 0%.And last the total percentages of the improvement from the pre-test into post-test II were 71,12%. The results of the research showed that the use of Short Story Analysis can improve students’ mastery of the Simple Past Tense and the students are interested to used it. Based on the result, this research is helpful information for English teachers, students, and all the readers to improve the mastery of the Simple Past Tense. Keywords: short story analysis, classroom action research, simple past tense Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui apakah Analisis Cerita Pendek meningkatkan penguasaan siswa kelas X terhadap Simple Past Tense dan untuk meneliti apakah siswa kelas X tertarik dengan penggunaan Analisis Cerita Pendek untuk meningkatkan penguasaan Simple Past Tense. Para peserta penelitian tindakan kelas ini adalah 33 siswa di kelas X Akuntansi 2 di SMK Muara Indonesia, Jakarta Timur. Penelitian ini merupakan Penelitian Tindakan Kelas yang dilakukan dalam dua siklus. Peneliti menggunakan tes dan observasi untuk mengumpulkan data. Dalam analisis data, data kuantitatif dan kualitatif digunakan untuk menyajikan peningkatan penguasaan siswa kelas X 'terhadap Simple Past Tense Presentasi nilai siswa pada pre-test untuk kategori yang lebih tinggi "sangat baik" adalah 0%, dan kategori paling rendah "mengalami kesulitan" adalah 20,75%. Nilai rata-rata pada pre-test adalah 48,48. Dalam pertemuan berikutnya di kemajuan tes, nilai rata-rata siswa adalah 57,2. Dalam post-test I nilai siswa untuk kategori "sangat baik" adalah 7,65%, dan kategori "mengalami kesulitan" adalah 3,47%. Ratarata dari post-test I adalah 69,69. Dalam post-test II presentasi nilai siswa untuk kategori "sangat baik" adalah 36,88% dan kategori "mengalami kesulitan" adalah 0%. Total nila rata-rata dari pre-test sampai dengan post-test II adalah 71,12. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan Analisis Cerpen dapat meningkatkan penguasaan siswa terhadap Simple Past Tense dan menarik bagi siswa untuk menggunakannya. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian informasi ini berguna untuk guru bahasa Inggris, mahasiswa, dan semua pembaca untuk meningkatkan penguasaan Simple Past Tense.
