Abstract

The main objectives of this study were to investigate the students’ perception on the use of English songs towards English vocabulary development and also to compare the perception of seventh and eighth grades. This study was conducted at SMP 6 PSKD Depok. This study used survey method which used the explanatory mixed method design. It involved 41 students as respondents and the students were taken from the seventh and eighth grades. In order to meet the objectives, the researcher collected quantitative data, using in a questionnaire (26 items). The questionnaire was then analyzed using Likert scale (1-5 scales), then qualitative data collected using interview (4 students) and implemented descriptive technique. Based on the data analysis, it can be concluded that the majority of students agreed that English songs can develop their English vocabulary and English songs also useful to improve their English language skills and language elements. Keywords: English songs, vocabulary, perception Tujuan utama dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menyelidiki persepsi siswa tentang penggunaan lagu-lagu bahasa Inggris terhadap pengembangan kosakata bahasa Inggris dan juga untuk membandingkan persepsi kelas tujuh dan delapan. Penelitian ini dilakukan di SMP 6 PSKD Depok. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah survei yang berbentuk metode campuran yang bersifat penjelasan. Melibatkan 41 siswa sebagai responden dan siswa diambil dari kelas tujuh dan delapan. Dalam rangka memenuhi tujuan, peneliti mengumpulkan data kuantitatif, menggunakan dalam kuesioner (26 item). Kuesioner kemudian dianalisis menggunakan skala Likert(1-5 sisik), kemudian data kualitatif dikumpulkan menggunakan wawancara (4 siswa) dan teknik deskriptif dilaksanakan. Berdasarkan analisis data, dapat disimpulkan bahwa mayoritas siswa sepakat bahwa lagu bahasa Inggris dapat mengembangkan kosakata bahasa Inggris mereka dan lagu-lagu bahasa Inggris juga berguna untuk meningkatkan kemampuan bahasa Inggris mereka dan unsur bahasa.
