Abstract
Korean dramas are dramas that have very high popularity. The popularity of Korean dramas has attracted many fans, Korean boybands and girlbands and many fans in Indonesia. On the other hand, Indonesian soap operas also have very interesting soap operas, but the interest among viewers of Indonesian dramas (soap operas) is somewhat less than viewers of Korean dramas because Indonesian dramas (soap operas) are still not attractive in terms of culture, fashion, food, and in terms of image appearance in soap operas. This research aims to compare the meaning of Gen Z audiences regarding the popularity of Korean dramas and Indonesian soap operas among Gen Z audiences in the Jakarta area. The theory used is the cultivation theory by Gerbner and Gross with the existence of light and heavy audiences as well as the concept of meaning and popularity according to Polkinghorne. The research method used was descriptive qualitative with data collection techniques through Focus Group Discussion (FGD) because the sources were busy so the data were searched for using FGD on Gmeet and observation. The research results show that Korean dramas are more popular because of their production quality, interesting storylines and relevant moral messages. On the other hand, Indonesian soap operas, although they have an appeal for cultural and emotional values, are often criticized because their stories are easy to predict and the quality of the shooting is not good or lacking. In conclusion, Gen Z viewers are more likely to interpret Korean dramas positively because they are more in line with their preferences and expectations for the shows they have watched.
