Abstract
The pandemic in question has resulted in profound changes in various aspects of human life globally, including in the religious context. The elderly, as a vulnerable group, experience significant psychological and spiritual impacts, manifesting as symptoms of worry, anxiety, stress, feelings of loneliness, depression, and spiritual crisis. CRE plays a crucial role in providing emotional support and spiritual solace to the elderly amid the pandemic, helping them to cope with the psychological challenges they face. Transformative learning models have proven to be effective in assisting them in overcoming these difficulties. In the context of the pandemic, CRE becomes a platform for the elderly to discuss their fears and concerns while also providing purpose and meaning to their lives during the crisis. Transformative CRE assists elderly in understanding how the Christian faith addresses the challenges posed by the pandemic. They actively engage in the learning process, engage in critical reflection, participate in reflective discussions, and develop relevant strategies for navigating life during the pandemic. This research employs a qualitative method using a case study approach, gathering data through interviews with members of the Elderly Section of HKBP Tebet. The findings illustrate that Mezirow's Transformative Learning Theory can be effectively applied in CRE learning for the elderly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Research participants acknowledged the dilemmas they faced, characterized by psychological and spiritual disturbances. However, through transformative learning, they were able to engage in critical reflection and take appropriate actions to navigate the challenges amid the pandemic. The results serve as the foundation for the conclusion that the application of the concept of transformative learning has a positive impact on the elderly, strengthens their Christian fellowship, and provides inspiration for overcoming challenges in the lives of congregation members. Therefore, recommendations are made for churches to integrate transformative learning into their services by developing a Transformative CRE’s curriculum that aligns with the crisis faced by their members. Keywords: Transformative Learning, Elderly Church Members, COVID-19 Pandemic, Christian Religious Education, Psychological and Spiritual Impact.
