Abstract

Daun sirih merah mengandung minyak atsiri dengan komponen utamanya adalah fenol dan senyawa turunannya seperti kavikol, cavibetol, carvacol,eugenol yang dapat mendenaturasi protein sel bakteri. Senyawa eugenol bersifat bakterisida dengan meningkatkan permeabilitias membran bakteri. Daun sirih merah memiliki efek antibakteri terhadap beberapa bakteri seperti Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sanguis, dan Staphylococcus aureus. Staphylococcus aureus sendiri merupakan flora normal dalam tubuh namun pada kondisi tertentu dapat menjadi patogen bagi manusia. Desain penelitian yang digunakan adalah penelitian eksperimental dengan pendekatan Postest Only Control Group Design menguji daya hambat ekstrak etanol daun sirih merah terhadap pertumbuhan bakteri Staphylococcus aureus. Hasil penelitian ini didapatkan semakin tinggi konsentrasi ekstrak semakin besar zona hambat yang terbentuk. Kata Kunci: Ekstrak Etanol, Staphylococcus aureus, Daun Sirih Merah Red betel leaf contains essential oil with its main components are phenol and derivatives such as kavikol, cavibetol, carvacol, eugenol which can denaturate bacterial cell proteins. The eugenol compound is bactericidal by increasing bacterial membrane permeability. Red betel leaf has an antibacterial effect on several bacteria such as Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sanguis, and Staphylococcus aureus. Staphylococcus aureus itself is a normal flora in the body but in certain conditions can be a pathogen for humans. The research design used was experimental research with the Postest Only Control Group Design approach testing the inhibition of red betel leaf ethanol extract on the growth of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. The results of this study found that the higher the concentration of extract the greater the inhibition zone formed. Keywords: Ethanol Extract, Staphylococcus aureus, Red Betel Leaves
