Abstract

The media is one of the means of mass communication that plays an important role in presenting information to the public. The arrival of the political year requires the media to be independent to maintain its function in the public sphere. Independent media is the freedom of newsroom without outside intervention in producing information. The 2019 general election attracted media attention, especially the election of Presidential candidates and Vice Presidential candidates, Media Indonesia or Metro TV is one of the national media that intensely highlights political issues in the 2019 election. As expressed through one of its broadcast programs, namely Editorial Media Indonesia. Of course, there are parties who can be harmed if the Media Indonesia Editorial program is not independent in creating balanced information ahead of the 2019 presidential election. This research is to determine how the independence of the Indonesian Media Editorial program in broadcasting the issue of Presidential Candidates and Vice Presidential Candidates in the 2019 General Election. Researchers used a descriptive qualitative approach and Gamson and Modigliani's framing analysis technique model was used to analyze four editions of the Indonesian Media Editorial program from August 2018-February 2019. The results showed that the Indonesian Media Editorial program has not been independent in broadcasting the issue of Presidential candidates and Vice Presidential candidates in the 2019 General Election. The tendency of partisanship is thicker to certain parties and candidates than to present balanced information as an independent attitude. So that the function as one of the pillars of democracy in creating balanced and fair information on all groups that compete in the political stage has not been realized. Keywords: Independence, editorial, framing analysis, 2019 presidential election.
