Abstract

Kata kunci : Perokok, pH saliva, Amilase Daily cigarette consumption has an impact on the decreasing of salivary secretion and its bicarbonate content. Continuous smoking will cause a decrease of salivary pH, resulting in a decrease of salivary amylase activity. Design of this study is descriptive analytic with cross sectional approach. Sample consists of 15 students with smoking habit categorized as mild, moderate and heavy smokers, and 5 non-smokers as control. Sampling technique was non random purposive sampling. Result of this study indicated the average time taken by smokers salivary amylase to hydrolyze amylum was longer than non-smokers salivary amylase with p value <0.05. Fisher test results p value 0.004 indicating an influence of smoking on the activity of salivary enzyme. It can be concluded that the pH value and salivary amylase activity were lower in smokers than non-smokers. Key words: Smokers, Salivary pH, Amylase
