Abstract

Hernia nucleus pulposus (HNP) is a disease in which the annulus fibrosus ruptures that causing the nucleus pulposus to protrude or bulge and press against the spinal canal, causing pain in the vertebrae. One of the risk factors for hernia nucleus pulposus (HNP) is body mass index (BMI). This study aims to determine the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and the incidence of lumbar herniated nucleus pulposus (HNP) in low back pain (LBP) patients at UKI General Hospital for the period January – June 2020. The study design used was retrospective. The sample used was 63 patients in accordance with inclusion criteria. The instruments used are medical records of Low Back Pain (LBP) patient at UKI Hospital for the period January – June 2020. The results showed from a low back pain patient there were 24 (38.0%) patient with lumbal hernia nucleus pulposus, most patients with lumbar HNP were in the age category > 65 years as many as 11 people (45.8%), lumbar HNP patients were dominated by female sex as many as 17 people (70.8%), and patients with lumbar HNP with BMI ≥ 23 as many as 18 people (75.0%). The results of the chi-square correlation test p-value 0.510 > 0.05, it can be concluded that there is no significant relationship between body mass index (BMI) and lumbar hernia nucleus pulposus (HNP) in low back pain (LBP) patients at UKI General Hospital in January – June 2020.
