Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out what kind of category shift occurs in the movie subtitle of Sherlock Holmes (2009) and to analyze and explain the selected category shift used as the part of translating the movie subtitle. The source of the data in this research is English-Indonesia text of Sherlock Holmes movies. The writer analyzed the occurrence of category shift between the source language and the target language. The writer found out that there are four types of category shift that occur in the movie subtitle of Sherlock Holmes: the Structure shift, class shift, unit shift and intra system shift. The writer focused only on analyzing the structure shift and the unit shift. The writer compared the source language and the target language sentence to sentence. The data were analyzed using the theory of Translation Shift proposed by Catford. The writer found out 156 data of structure shift and 36 data of unit shift. The structure shift occurs because the grammatical form between the source language and target language are different. The unit shift occurs because there is often no equivalence of rank between the source language and target language, in which the translation at one rank in source language is at different rank in target language. Category shift occurs because every language has a different grammatical form. Thus, the translator used shifting in translation to create an appropriate translation from source language into target language. It is hoped that the translation analysis and the explanation about the structure shift and the unit shift will help the readers to comprehend about the structure shift and unit shift. Keywords: Shifting, movie subtitle, translation analysis.
