Abstract

This study departs from the argument that the persistence of the black market cannot be understood solely as a result of weak state or absent law, but rather as the result of disciplinary power operating productively in the social life of border communities. Through historical tracing and discourse analysis, this study shows that black market practices operate as a local regime of truth shaped by cross-border kinship history, economic needs, and the social experiences of the community. The state is present through border institutions and regulations as a panoptic mechanism that produces continuous surveillance and symbolic compliance, not to eliminate these practices, but to organize them within controllable boundaries. The findings of this study confirm that black market practices continue to be reproduced through negotiations of community compliance and resistance, thus becoming an integral part of the social order of the border. Thus, this research contributes to expanding the understanding of the informal economy by placing it within the framework of power relations, knowledge, and discipline.
