Abstract

This study was conducted to find out the effectiveness of Cooperative Learning in developing the eighth graders’ reading comprehension achievement at SMP Nusantara. Cooperative Learning is actually a generic term refers to numerous method for grouping students. Cooperative Learning is not the same as group working. There was one problem that was formulated in this study. That was “is there any significant effect of Cooperative Learning on reading comprehension skills of the eighth graders at SMP Nusantara?” In order to answer the problem, an experimental method was used. In this method, there were two groups involved in this study. The first group was an experimental group that was treated using Cooperative Learning and the other one was a control group as the comparison to the first group. The control group was treated using traditional method. To gather the data, pre test and post test were carried on to both groups. The pre test was conducted before the treatment and the post test was conducted after the treatment. The result showed that Sig. (2-tailed) of the pre test was 0.845. It means that the input competence of both group were not significantly different. The treatment was carried on for 4 meetings. Both group showed significant different after the course. However, the experimental group achieved higher competence than the control group with Sig. (2-tailed) 0.001 which less than 0.05. It means that the Cooperative Learning applied in SMP Nusantara was effective to improve the students’ reading comprehension skills. This research is intended to give a portrait how Cooperative Learning applied in the Junior High School. This research also expected to give an alternative method for English teacher junior high school students and give an overview for other researchers who do research in language teaching method for junior high school students. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui efektivitas Cooperative Learning dalam mengembangkan prestasi pemahaman membaca siswa kelas delapan di SMP Nusantara. Cooperative Learning adalah sebuah istilah umum mengacu pada metode pengelompokan siswa. Cooperative Learning tidak sama dengan kerja kelompok. Ada satu hal yang menjadi permasalahan dalam penelitian ini. Masalah tersebut adalah "apakah ada pengaruh yang signifikan dari Cooperative Learning terhadap kemampuan pemahaman membaca siswa kelas delapan di SMP Nusantara?" Untuk menjawab masalah tersebut, metode eksperimental digunakan. Dalam metode ini, ada dua kelompok yang terlibat dalam penelitian ini. Kelompok pertama adalah kelompok eksperimen yang diajarkan dengan menggunakan pembelajaran kooperatif dan yang lainnya adalah kelompok kontrol sebagai perbandingan dengan kelompok pertama. Kelompok kontrol diajarkan dengan menggunakan metode tradisional. Untuk mengumpulkan data, pre test dan post test dilakukan pada kedua kelompok. Pre- test dilakukan sebelum diterapkan Cooperative Learning dan post test dilakukan setelah diterapkan Cooperative Learning. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Sig. (2-tailed) dari pre test adalah 0.845. Ini berarti bahwa kemampuan dari kedua kelompok tidak berbeda secara signifikan. Metode Cooperative Learning” diterapkan selama 4 kali pertemuan. Kedua kelompok menunjukkan perbedaan yang nyata setelah mendapatkan pembelajaran . Namun, kelompok eksperimen mencapai kompetensi yang lebih tinggi daripada kelompok kontrol dengan Sig. (2-tailed) 0,001 yang kurang dari 0,05. Ini berarti bahwa Pembelajaran Kooperatif yang diterapkan di SMP Nusantara adalah efektif untuk meningkatkan keterampilan pemahaman membaca siswa. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memberikan potret bagaimana Cooperative Learning diterapkan di SMP. Penelitian ini juga diharapkan dapat memberikan metode alternatif untuk guru bahasa Inggris siswa SMP dan memberikan gambaran bagi peneliti lain yang melakukan penelitian dalam metode pengajaran bahasa untuk siswa SMP.
