Abstract

This study is related to translation, focusing on the analysis of translation shifts. It discusses category shifts in the translation of adjective phrases from English to Indonesian in the subtitles of the movie Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. This study aims to identify the types of category shifts that occur in the translation of adjective phrases and to determine the most dominant type of category shift. This study employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. The research data consist of 118 adjective phrases obtained from the source and the target language subtitles. Data were collected using the observation method (metode simak) and note-taking technique (teknik catat) based on Mahsun's (2017) theory, by observing the source text subtitles and their translations, and then writing down all adjective phrases relevant for analysis. Meanwhile, the data analysis was conducted using the intralingual equivalent method (metode padan intralingual) with the comparative-contrastive technique (teknik hubung banding membedakan), as proposed by Mahsun (2017), which compares adjective phrases in both languages to identify the occurrence of category shifts. The analysis was conducted with reference to Catford's (1965) theory of category shift, namely structure shift, class shift, unit shift, and intra-system shift. The results of the study showed that out of 118 adjective phrases, there were 89 adjective phrases that underwent category shift. The most dominant type of category shift found was the unit shift, totaling 36 instances (40.44%), followed by the structure shift with 28 instances (31.46%), and the class shift with 24 instances (26.96%). Meanwhile, intra-system shift was the least common type, occurring only once (1.12%). These findings indicate that the differences in grammatical units between the source language and the target language are the main factor contributing to the occurrence of category shifts in the translation of adjective phrases in the movie’s subtitles.
