Abstract

This research is titled In Search of Self Identity in Nicole Chung’s Memoir All You Can Ever Know, a memoir telling the story of Nicole Chung's struggle to find her identity as a Korean descendant adopted into a white family and raised in an environment dominated by that ethnicity. Overall, the memoir not only highlighted Nicole Chung's personal experiences with her adoptive family and new environment but also tells the story about her biological family. The study aims to answer several key questions, including: 1) What does the memoir say about Nicole Chung’s family background, 2) How is the main character's journey in search of identity, and 3) How does Nicole change after her identity journey. The theoretical foundations the present writer used in this research is Erik Erikson's psychosocial development theory. The research findings indicate that Nicole Chung went through the phases of initiative vs. guilt, she was not successful in this stage because she never get the chance to bond with her mother; industry vs. inferiority, Nicole felt inferior to her peers because no one stood up for her; identity vs. role confusion, Nicole began to show hope for the future because she finally found a role model; intimacy vs. isolation, Nicole was proven successful during this stage because she made peace with her condition. Her identity journey played a big part in shaping who she became.
