Abstract
This study aims to analyze Indonesia’s implementation of environmentalism strategies within palm oil export geopolitics amidst the global green political movement's criticism, particularly from the European Union. International pressure on the palm oil industry has increased due to regulations such as the Renewable Energy Directive II (RED II) and the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which restrict access to Indonesia's export markets. Data from Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS, 2021) show that Indonesia’s palm oil exports reached over 30 billion USD in 2021, but it faces significant threats due to these strict regulations. This study uses a qualitative approach with theories of strategic environmentalism, green diplomacy, and export geopolitics to illustrate how Indonesia shapes its sustainability narrative through the public campaign "Sawit Baik", the ISPO and RSPO certifications adopted by Indonesian palm oil companies, as well as forming coalitions with other palm oil-producing countries. The research findings show that Indonesia's environmentalism strategy serves two functions: (1) strengthening its bargaining power in international trade negotiations, and (2) shaping Indonesia’s international image as a nation committed to sustainability. This study concludes that environmentalism in this context serves not only as an ecological value but also as an effective geopolitical instrument that enhances Indonesia’s competitiveness in the global market.
