Abstract

Novel ini menceritakan kehidupan Bakha yang berasal dari kelompok tak tersentuh, atau disebut Dalit yang dianggap sebagai kelompok kasta terendah di India. Melalui perjalanan Bakha sehari-hari, novel ini mengeksplorasi tema-tema seperti ketidakadilan sosial, diskriminasi kasta, dan pencarian identitas diri. Novel ini berakhir dengan penuh harapan ketika Bakha mendengar seruan Mahatma Gandhi untuk menghapuskan sistem kasta, memberikan secercah harapan untuk masa depan yang lebih adil. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengajukan interpretasi penulis bahwa novel Untouchable karya Raj Mulk Anand menggambarkan diskriminasi kasta yang dialami oleh Bakha dan mereka yang berada di kasta terendah. Penulis menggunakan metode kualitatif untuk menganalisa diskriminasi apa saja yang dialami serta bagaimana cara perlawanan Bakha yang ingin keluar dari sistem kasta di dalam novel ini. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori Sosiologi Sastra oleh Lucien Goldmann. Data penelitian yang diambil oleh penulis adalah narasi dan dialog yang menggambarkan masalah diskriminasi kasta sehingga terjadi kekerasan seperti kekerasan fisik dan verbal. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah penulis menemukan bahwa masih adanya kekerasan akibat diskriminasi berbasis kasta yang dialami oleh kaum Dalit di India. Terdapat perlawanan yang dilakukan oleh kaum Dalit pada saat itu walaupun tidak berdampak besar bagi mereka serta melihat motivasi seperti apa yang dialami Bakha untuk dapat keluar dari ketidakadilan berbasis kasta di India. / The novel narrates the life of Bakha who belongs to the Untouchable, the Dalit group which is considered the lowest caste group in India. Through Bakha's daylong journey, the novel explores themes such as social injustice, caste discrimination, and the search for self-identity. The novel ends on a hopeful note when Bakha hears about Mahatma Gandhi's call to abolish the caste system, providing a spark of hope for a more just future. This study aims to propose the writer's interpretation that Raj Mulk Anand's Untouchable depicts the Caste Discrimination experienced by Bakha and those in the lowest caste. The writer uses a qualitative method to analyze what discrimination is experienced and how Bakha's resistance to get out of the caste system in this novel. This research uses the theory of Sociology of Literature by Lucien Goldmann. The study data taken by the writer are narratives and dialogues that describe the problem of caste discrimination so that the violence experienced such as physical and verbal violence. The result of this research is that the writer finds that there is still violence due to caste-based discrimination experienced by Dalits in India. There was resistance by Dalits at the time even though it did not have a big impact on them and see what kind of motivation Bakha experienced to get out of caste-based injustice in India.
