Abstract

This research discusses the strategies of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) in balancing Western dominance in global governance, a crucial topic in contemporary international relations studies. The urgency of this discussion arises from the need to understand how alliances of developing countries like BRICS can influence the global balance of power, which has long been dominated by the United States and its allies over the past decades. This research employs the theory of soft power and the concept of balance of power as the theoretical framework to analyze BRICS' strategies in creating a more multipolar global governance. The research method used is qualitative, involving secondary data analysis through literature review of official documents, academic literature, and news sources. This analysis aims to gain a deeper understanding of the approaches taken by BRICS in challenging Western hegemony. The results of the research indicate that BRICS is capable of offering alternatives in the global economic order through financial institutions such as the New Development Bank (NDB) and the Contingent Reserve Arrangement (CRA). These initiatives provide strategic options for developing countries to reduce their dependence on Western financial institutions that have long dominated and often prioritized hegemonic interests. Thus, BRICS strengthens efforts to create a more inclusive and equitable international economic system that better reflects the aspirations and needs of developing countries.
